The 23rd Session of the PECSRL - Permanent European Conference for the Study of the Rural Landscape will reflect on "Landscapes, Identities and Development", in Lisbon and Obidos, 1st-5th September 2008.
In order to give more depth to the discussions during the Conference, Professor Zoran Roca asked me to open an internet Forum for debating the problems of landscapes, identities and sustainable development before the Conference.

The theme chosen for the Conference suggests three main lines of reflection:

(i) Exploring the historic links between evolving landscapes and their identitory, territorial, natural, economic and cultural basis and significance in the context of environmental, socio-economic and cultural change.

(ii) Reflecting on the way natural, economic, cultural and other features linked with landscape contribute to the affirmation or re-affirmation as a resource and basis for the local and regional development at the time of globalization.

(iii) Considering landscapes as a constitutive element in designing, managing and planning local and regional sustainable development, and, as a consequence, in developing international cooperation in the field of landscape research.

What appears important is to disentangle the links between landscapes, identities and development in order to see how landscape policies may help to resolve two of the major contemporary problems: the crisis of identities and the growing threat on environments - at any scale, from local to global.

In order to launch the discussion, you will find two texts, A and B. The text A looks at the possibility of building new strategies for managing landscapes and structuring new identities as tools for sustainable development. The text B is longer: it reviews the basic interpretations of the idea of landscape.
The former text is intended to raise questions and interpretations, while the latter one offers a more general reflection on landscapes, environments, identities and development.
